Covid-19 has impacted some plumbers and installers businesses more than others… The current UK government advice is for everyone in the UK to practice social distancing - limiting face-toface contact with people who are not in your household and maintaining a two-metre distance between one another. Where this is not possible - such as on public transport etc. you need to wear a face mask. The governments of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have issued their own guidance. Plumbers and installers will, of course, be concerned about the impact that lockdown has had on their businesses. The government has outlined several ways of supporting businesses during this challenging time including but not limited to business interruption loans, the job retention scheme and income support for the self-employed. As the easing of lock down continues and we make tentative steps to determine our way forward, where does this leave plumbers and installers re their prospect of working? Given the present climate, many homeowners may be confused and anxious about what work can be done and how they can keep safe with tradespeople coming into or even outside of their homes. For tradespeople who are working, there are ways to reassure and protect customers (and themselves) such as limiting their time in a house, developer-update.co.uk

disinfecting door handles they’ve touched, taking drinks so as not to use the homeowners mugs and of course wearing a mask and washing their hands regularly with soap and water/hand sanitiser – or wear gloves. Recently, The IPG ran a Facebook competition, asking plumbers and installers to answer three simple questions, with the aim of understanding; what they thought of the Government schemes to help self-employed workers, if they were still working and how Covid-19 has impacted their business. The findings are telling (results compiled June 1, 2020), the

Government support packages are working for some plumbers and installers but not for others. 56% felt that the schemes were positive and very helpful during these difficult times, one installer said that “they were a good solution to an impossible situation”. 38% felt that they were not much help, it took too long to get any payment and they needed to be better. 3% had no opinion. We also shed some light on the percentage of plumbers and installers who were still working and those who were not. 58% had stopped working, with one participant stating, “It has completely shut down my business, as a domestic plumber/bathroom fitter

Industry News 05

I had to completely stop working for the safety of myself and customers”. Another said: “We have closed down as we are domestic, no one wanted us to do house calls, jobs haven’t really been coming in, I’ve only had 2 emergencies to go to in this time”. In contrast, 42% revealed that they were still working, stating various reasons for this, one plumber commented: “As a self-employed contractor, the initial lockdown resulted in me being out of work for a while - until the building site I was on implemented Covid safety measures”. Another remarked: “We are working but more aware of sanitising and customer interaction, we just have to adjust

to suit the current situation - keep 2 meters apart, wear masks and gloves and wash regularly, making customers aware of procedures.” David Cairns, Head of Supplier and Commercial Strategy at The IPG supports the safe working code stating: “In the UK, heating installers and plumbers primarily work alone or in small teams in private properties, changing location on a regular basis. Now, more than ever, safe working arrangements and practices are an important area to focus on. “The public will become increasingly aware of the importance of not only using a tradesperson who is qualified,

but one who is also fully aware of Covid-19 health and safety measures.” He went on to say: “IPG members are all implementing Covid-19 health and safety measures in the workplace, making their stores a safe environment to shop in or click and collect. Never has buying from an independent business been more relevant. It is a significant contributing factor in supporting local employment, boosting UK innovation, as well as increasing environmental benefits. Support your local independent!” For more information please visit: www.the-ipg.co.uk developer-update.co.uk

Liverpool unveils £1.4bn Covid recovery building plan Liverpool has set out an ambitious £1.4bn plan to stimulate the city’s post-Covid recovery and prepare for the post-Brexit economy.

Now mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson is asking for £200m of central government funding for physical construction and more than £267m for apprenticeship and skills training programmes. A 178-page report sent to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor outlines how the city aims to prevent a socio-economic crisis deeper than the 1980s recession. The five-year plan would fire-up more than 25 shovel-ready projects to create an extra 12,000 construction jobs and more than 9,700 apprenticeships. Totalling £1.4bn, these projects include a new cruise terminal and a major housing development next to the International Festival Gardens site. It also highlights the opportunity to press ahead with the next phase of the city’s health innovation campus developer-update.co.uk

at Paddington Village as well as a Science and Tech Innovation Centre as part of the Liverpool John Moores University development at Copperas Hill in the city’s Knowledge Quarter.

“Forged by ambition and confidence to be innovative in how we create new skills, new homes and new jobs, and it has the weight of the entire city behind it.

The recovery plan, which was co-authored by independent economic consultants Metro Dynamics, has won backing for over 70 leading figures from the city’s commercial, legal, financial and cultural sectors.

“This recovery plan is immensely detailed and the sheer volume of partners involved across both public and private sectors from a wide range of disciplines underlines our commitment to seize what is quite simply a once in a lifetime opportunity to reset Liverpool.

Before Covid-19 struck, Liverpool was averaging £1bn a year in regeneration investment as a leading destination for medical research, digital health and life sciences.

“It has been researched, analysed and fully costed and I’m confident the government will see that Liverpool means business.

The Government is due to announce a raft of emergency employment and business support measures this Autumn. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “This recovery plan is a blueprint for a new Liverpool.

“This recovery plan is all about partnerships – and we need the government to act as one too. The return on investment is huge, a stimulus package that will not just benefit Liverpool – but also the region and the country.”

Polypipe celebrates £25m Blackpool project One of England’s most iconic venues is undergoing a huge £25m rebuild with help from Polypipe Building Services.

The Grade II Listed Blackpool Winter Gardens is set to open a new conference centre this year in what is the first major development at the site since the construction of the Opera House in 1939.

This was a challenging project - with both a refurbishment of the existing building and a new-build as part of the complex - so Polypipe Building Services, the commercial building specialists, was called in to offer expertise on a drainage solution. Contractors McLaughlin and Harvey, and CMB Fylde Engineering needed an adaptable solution that would not reduce the available space in the two-storey, 3,890 square metre conference centre.

developer-update.co.uk

Polypipe Building Services provided on-site support and their high performance Terrain Fuze drainage system. The HDPE system was used in the large commercial spaces such as the halls and theatre space due to the homogenous weld giving it maximum joint integrity. Johnathan Greenwood, Strategic Project Manager at Polypipe Building Services, said: “As well as being a very prestigious project this was also a complex one. Refurbishing

a Grade II Listed building has a lot of complications to overcome. One of the key benefits to using Fuze at the Winter Gardens was the malleable nature of the product and the fact that it can be cut and welded into delicate positions and angles to create a bespoke system. “The malleability allows for extra security against loss of useable space. Fuze gives specifiers and installers maximum flexibility in the design process with this system and, as it is light in weight, it can be installed quickly and efficiently.” Funded by the Blackpool Regeneration project, the conference centre will have an exhibition space on first floor and a conference space with a seating capacity of 2,000 on the second floor. It will also be possible to use the space in conjunction with the other venues throughout the Winter Gardens giving a capacity of 7,000. The venue will feature state of the art amenities necessary for hosting modern conferences and exhibitions, including the latest audio and visual technology. developer-update.co.uk

Clean heat to spur low carbon jobs growth by 2030 A large percentage of lower carbon employment opportunities expected to emerge by the end of the decade will require individuals skilled in supporting green heat and power, says new research A majority of the low-carbon jobs available in the UK by 2030 are expected to involve providing cleaner electricity and heat, a new report has found. Research compiled by Ecuity Consulting for the Local Government Association (LGA) has considered the likely employments impacts of the emergence of a number of low carbon industries. These professions are seen as being central to support the government’s ambition to have fully eliminated or offset national carbon emissions by 2050. The research considered the jobs likely to be created in the fields of low carbon heating, which will focus on areas such heat networks, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems as well as installing technologies able to run on renewable energy. It has also factored in the likely skill requirements needed to sufficiently address demand for these systems and services. An anticipated reliance on alternative fuels such as bioenergy and hydrogen, and increased development of energy efficient products that includes insulation and monitoring and control solutions are also covered in the report. In England alone, efforts to move towards the government’s 2050 net-zero target are anticipated to see 690,000 low-carbon economy jobs exist by 2030. The figure is expected to rise to 1.18 million by 2050. Ecuity estimates that 46 per cent of these low carbon jobs by 2030 will be based around the supply of clean electricity and low-carbon heat technologies, such as providing heat pumps to homes and businesses. 21 per cent of the low-carbon employment opportunities will meanwhile be represented by work to developer-update.co.uk

introduce energy efficiency solutions such as insulation and controls, the report added. A “diverse” range of skills will be required to fill these potential employment opportunities, according to the research. Feedback from experts in the report identified immediate skills gaps in low carbon heat and power sectors. Another key finding of the research was the leading role local councils were looking to play to support net-zero transformation, particularly around funding for skills projects that can address local needs for new jobs. One such solution cited in the report would be the development of a pipeline of skilled individuals on a local level to fulfil lower carbon employment. Ecuity consulting added, “Councils and combined authorities could be supported to coordinate local education providers and businesses to bridge gaps in NVQ-related skills so that the workforce is equipped to meet emerging demand.” Robert Honeyman, economic analysis head with the consultancy group, said that a wide array of new technologies and workers would be needed for any viable national net-zero strategy. Mr Honeyman said that the shift to a low-carbon economy has been identified by researchers and economists as providing a clear route for economic recovery from Covid-19.

He said, “Local authorities can play an important role in identifying, allocating funding and supporting collaboration between local low carbon employers, education providers and the labour force.” “Through the implementation of ambitious reskilling schemes and emission reductions targets, local governments stand to gain not only by reducing their own carbon emissions, but also as promoters of strategic industries within their region and leaders within the net zero transition.” Cllr Sir Richard Leese, Chair of the LGA’s City Regions Board, said that a demand for ‘green jobs’ would “sky-rocket” in number towards 2050. He said that such a shift in the labour market would see local government having to play a vital role - based on each authority’s local knowledge and expertise - to fill these positions. He said “Localising and devolving skills investment, back to work support and any job guarantee will be critical to ensuring everyone benefits from new local jobs, including these one million new low carbon jobs.” “To help meet national climate change targets and capitalise on the green jobs revolution, councils need to be given long-term funding, devolved powers and easier access to complex government funding pots to help realise the government’s target of being carbon neutral by 2050.”

Leading HVAC industry figure predicts resurged IAQ interest in response to Covid19 The former CEO of Worcester Bosch, Richards Soper CBE, is predicting a renewed interest in indoor air quality amongst homeowners, residents and developers.

According to Soper, who is supporting the launch of Unico Systems’ small duct heating, cooling and ventilation into the UK, now is the time for installers to explore new technologies and to be a lot more vocal about indoor air quality to those outside of the industry. Soper said: “We’re all spending much more time at home due to Covid19 and having had some incredibly hot days in Spring people are already looking towards yet another record Summer and considering how to improve conditions in the home. Both air conditioning and filtration are common in cars, but with the ban on non-essential travel in effect even this has been out of bounds for most of us. “With the UK set to get even hotter over the coming years demand for the type of climate control and filtration currently only found in cars is only going to increase.” Another industry leader betting on a renewed interest in air quality is developer-update.co.uk

James Dyson, whose company has undertaken a major online television advertising campaign promoting its plug-in air purifiers. Soper continued: “There are HVAC options out there that are both cost-comparative, more effective and a lot quieter than traditional split systems and the latest plugin options.” Another driver of increased demand for improved indoor air quality is its ability to combat illness and allergen causing bacteria and microbes. Soper commented: “We now have systems that can provide year-round ventilation, an increasing necessity in air-tight homes, which according to a report last year saw 3.5 times the levels of indoor air pollution compared to outdoor[i]. Coupled with additional filtration and electric air cleaners homeowners and developers have the opportunity to kill and remove disease and allergen inducing bugs and microbes in the home.”

One installer who has already seen demand for HVAC solutions in response to health concerns is David Jackson, owner of Response Mechanical Services. Jackson said: “We’re predicting that health and wellbeing will be an increasing driver for installs in the coming months and years. Even before coronavirus we were seeing demand for improved air quality, particularly in offices which are often subject to annual flu and cold outbreaks, as well as in homes with families looking to reduce the impact of long-term health conditions such as multiple sclerosis and asthma.” Soper concluded: “IAQ will be an integral part of making the places we work and live safer in a post Coronavirus world. Understanding and being vocal about the types of HVAC technologies that can help improve indoor environments is key.” To find out more about Unico Systems visit: www.unicosystem.co.uk

Polypipe delivers water management solution to new £400m university campus

Editor’s Choice 19

Polypipe Building Services, the UK’s leading developer of water management solutions for the commercial sector, will help to complete one of the largest construction projects ever commissioned by a UK university. The Kent-based business was selected to supply a water management system to the University of Manchester’s colossal £400 million Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) in the city. Built environment consultant Arup requested Polypipe Building Services to provide a drainage management system for the eight-storey, 78,000sqm building. The Building Services team delivered a plastic solution which incorporated large diameter Terrain FUZE soil and waste pipes. The installation of the system was undertaken by mechanical contractor NG Bailey. To maximise installation efficiencies, Polypipe Building Services also provided continuous support during the design stage and training to contractors on site. Jonathan Greenwood, Technical Sales Manager at Polypipe Building Services, said: “In order to remove the rainwater, we worked with the design proposal and configured the FUZE trap in the basement with the expansion of pipe in horizontal runs, which included bracketry and jointing methods.

“We were able to offer a range of fittings and materials that were sympathetic to the aesthetics of the building, while ensuring contractors on site were fully prepared to install the solution when they were delivered to the development. “We pride ourselves on supplying systems that provide not only multifunctional benefits to the end user, but also financial and manpower efficiencies to our customers during projects.” According to the university, MECD has been designed to create “world-class facilities for innovation in technology and working practices, and encourage collaboration between researchers, schools and industry”. The seven-year development, which will have a huge overall floor space the size of 11 football pitches, will house almost 7,000 university students and more than 1,200 staff. Don Mercer, Mechanical Senior Project Manager at NG Bailey, said: “Having previously worked with Polypipe Building Services on a number of other projects, we were already familiar with the company’s dedication to quality and efficiency and its expertise. “Being such a high-profile development, we knew Polypipe was the ideal drainage provider for a project of this scale. We were naturally thrilled with the solution Polypipe supplied. It surpassed all expectations. “We look forward to continuing our great relationship with Polypipe Building Services in the coming years.” Diana Hampson, director of estates and facilities at the University of Manchester, added: “MECD will create facilities that will put the university at the forefront of engineering globally, helping attract even more world-class talent to the institution. “We are proud to provide such an exceptional space for our exceptional people.” MECD is due to open in 2021.

20 Lifts, Stairs & Balustrades

Grade 2 listed building gets new external platform lift The Bicester Courtyard Centre, located a few miles North of Oxford, is a Grade 2 listed building which required a new platform lift to allow access to the upper level. Their existing platform lift had been in place for over 20 years, but hadn’t been working for a number of years. Ability Lifts first removed, and disposed of this lift before replacing it with their Optimum 400 external platform lift. The existing lift pit was filled to provide a solid concrete base, allowing Ability Lifts to fit an external ramp. This also ensured that the new lift wasn’t sitting in a pit which could fill up with water and debris. Unlike external lifts offered by other companies, the Optimum 400 lift offers a full IP65 rating enabling it to be used externally in all weathers. The rating ensures the lift is protected against ingress of dust, as well as water jets from all directions. The shaft is constructed from hard wearing stainless steel, with a durable powder coated finish in a choice of four colours. Glazing is available on 3 sides of the enclosure to allow increased light into the shaft. NEW ‘POCKET DOOR’ ADDED TO BRIO RANGE OF SLIDING DOOR HARDWARE briouk.com

Brio has extended its established range of sliding door hardware with the new Brio Pocket Slide 80. Hidden from view once installed, the universally sized pocket door kit offers a flexible, simple-to-install solution for installers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), while reducing cost and valuable inventory space for architectural ironmongers (AIs) and builders merchants. As the only universal fitting kit, the Brio Pocket Slide 80 can cover installation widths ranging from 600 to 1000mm. Simple, efficient and customisable, the kit is easy to assemble and can be fit by a single installer – reducing time, inventory and labour costs for those working on new build projects and extensions. Included in the pack is an adjustable stopper, forward and back spacer, a stylish black anodised track and wheels with narrow channels for a stable slide of the door. With a quality multilayer wooden beam, the Brio Pocket Slide 80 also absorbs vibrations and noise, making it the perfect fit for en-suite bathrooms.

David Newton, general manager at Brio UK comments: “The pocket door market is one of the largest door hardware markets in the UK, so it’s only logical for us to add this timeless and sleek product to our growing product portfolio. “Designed with ease of use and practicality in mind, the biggest advantage of the Brio pocket door kit is its universal size. As a ‘one-size-fitsall’ product, it removes the headache of choosing the right-sized solution for a project – making the installation process even easier for installers, building contractors and OEMs. The customisable size also reduces the need for AIs and builders merchants to stock various sizes, helping decrease cost and extend inventory space.”

video has been produced to assist with the installation of the product, which users can view online. Brio, part of the Allegion family of brands, is an acknowledged global leader in the sliding and folding door industry. For more details on Brio sliding and folding door hardware, visit the website: briouk.com

The Brio Pocket Slide 80 is a certified product and has been put through 100,000 slide cycles as per EN 1527, giving users the peace of mind that this is a sliding door made to last. In line with the launch, a step-by-step developer-update.co.uk

P C Henderson Donates Hardware to Assist School Rebuild in Nepal Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, has recently donated materials to help with the rebuild of a primary school in Nepal after it was left devastated by an earthquake in 2015. Situated on a picturesque mountainside, the village of San Bhorle was left in ruins when the 7.8Mw earthquake hit, levelling every one of its 43 houses and primary school. All but one resident survived, but the community was left to rebuild their lives with no materials, tools or machinery. Learning Planet, a charity which helps remote communities design, finance and construct new schools, stepped in to help. As the only communal building in the village - and the only one which would have permanent power and internet access - the local community required a school building which could also be used for other events such as village meetings and celebrations. In order to achieve this level of flexibility, large bi-folding doors were needed in the centre of the building. This would allow the area to be used as a classroom when closed off or put to other uses when opened up. A folding partition wall was also to be installed in one of the classrooms, allowing teachers to create a private office space when necessary. Justin Wickham, Co-Founder and Executive Director at Learning Planet, commented “I was looking for a really solid system which would work faultlessly in a very remote location, for years, with minimal maintenance. After some research, I got in touch with the team at P C Henderson. I was really moved when they offered to donate all of the hardware free of charge. It was extremely heartening to get such a positive response”.

important that the system could comfortably cope with a heavy load - whilst still allowing for effortless and safe opening by adults and children. “The Securefold system works beautifully for our requirements. We opted to install the doors in five sets of two – meaning they can be moved around in pairs to create gaps for fresh air, light and easy access. The doors can also be stacked completely clear of the opening – creating a huge, open, covered atrium – a perfect space for performances, and for hosting all kinds of village events. “The installation went smoothly except for a snag when we realised the Securefold bolts were a centimetre too long. We couldn’t shorten the bolts, or make/buy other ones to fit. It looked like a deal breaker until our carpenter appeared with some washers he’d made from a flip flop! It worked a dream. In remote locations, we often rely on that kind of ingenuity, as standard materials just aren’t available”, continued Justin. P C Henderson’s Husky Folding door hardware was also specified for the internal partition wall required in the classroom. With only a few small pieces of building work required to get the project completely finished, the school should hopefully be in full use in the near future. Stephanie Lee, Marketing Manager at P C Henderson, commented “Each year P C Henderson commits to supporting charities on a local, national and international scale. We were delighted to support such a fantastic cause, it’s great to see how our hardware can be used to create flexible solutions which have a huge impact for local communities”.

26 Roofing LANGLEY PROVIDES WATERPROOFING SOLUTION FOR GREEN ROOFS ON EXTENSIVE NEW-BUILD HOUSING PROJECT When approached to work on a large residential new-build housing project in Walthamstow, leading waterproofing and roofing expert, Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd was on-hand to provide the ideal solution with Approved Contractor, T & T Roofing Limited.

Walthamstow continues to be the centre of a large-scale modernisation and renewal strategy. Taylor Wimpey is one, of several developers, working to turn the former industrial area of Blackhorse Lane into a vibrant community that will attract a new generation of residents and businesses. As a part of the ambitious regeneration, Taylor Wimpey’s Eclipse development on Blackhorse Lane will deliver 499 one, two and three bedroom apartments across three phases. Each block features innovative green roof spaces over both affordable and private properties. Building pressure for national housebuilders to meet the targeted number of new build homes continues to increase year on year. Latest information included within a Commons Library Briefing (March 2020), now estimates the number of new homes needed in England is up to 345,000 per year. In 2018/19 the total housing stock in England increased by approximately 241,000 homes, and although this is 9% higher than the previous year, it is still lower than estimated requirement. On phase three of the development, Taylor Wimpey needed a supplier and trusted roofing contractor team that could reliably respond to the demand of delivering system installations swiftly. This project contributed towards achieving the defined number of new homes needed for the local area. To this end, it was important that the roofing system developer-update.co.uk

specified could reliably be installed swiftly to help meet this requirement. Speaking on the decision to choose Langley’s roofing system solution, Ryan Gow, Externals Site Manager at Taylor Wimpey, commented: “The huge scale of the Blackhorse Lane development presented several challenges that we needed to overcome. For the roofing, we needed speed of installation without compromising quality and durability. We were impressed with Langley’s HM-40 Paratech Hot-Melt Roofing System performance. As this was the third phase of the development space

was a critical factor, it was therefore important that deliveries were closely managed to avoid delays to the build schedule. Langley ensured that this was always the case, so that delays never occurred.” Langley’s innovative HM-40 Paratech Hot-Melt Roofing system offers a number of features and characteristics that made it the ideal choice. Unlike other hot melt solutions, which tend to use fleeces, the Paratech system incorporates a reinforcement mesh allowing the system to be rolled out and thus making installation quicker.

Roofing

Speaking on the installation process, Thomas Peebles, Managing Director at T & T Roofing Limited, a Langley Approved Contractor, commented: “The features of the HM-40 system provide a seamless, issue-free, roof installation, with minimal disruption and speedy install times. Langley’s technical team is always on-hand to provide assistance when necessary, working collaboratively to guarantee a consistent and high-quality installation.” The HM-40 Hot Melt Roofing system has been specially designed for new-build projects, particularly where a fast install and fully bonded system is required, meaning further trades can access the area. As such, the solution is primarily used for concrete substrates, but can also be used on plywood and for a warm or cold roof configuration. As well as offering quick installation, the solution can be used for weatherproofing for green roofs, terraces and podium decks. Additionally, when installed by an approved contractor, the HM-40 system provides up 40-years

durability. To this end, the system also meets NHBC Technical Standards Chapter 7.1 for roofs and balconies and its performance has been certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA). Speaking on the specification of the HM-40 Hot Melt Roofing system, Chetin Ali, Area Manager at Langley commented: “The solution used at Blackhorse Lane perfectly encapsulates what sets us apart. As with all our projects, we provided the project team with a full holistic package, which includes technical and design advice, specifications, site monitoring, reporting and warranty inspections. The monolithic, elastomeric waterproofing system is long-lasting and has incredible tensile strength. Its rapid drying solution means it can be quickly accessed by following trades on-site. It also enables rapid installation, which was a big benefit on this project.” Ryan Gow concluded: “We were thoroughly pleased with the waterproofing solution and how

efficiently it could be installed. The 40-year warranty that is included to cover both the materials and workmanship, provides us and the new homeowners at the development with peace of mind and the quality of construction we pride ourselves on.” The majority of the development is now complete, with the final homes due for completion in 2020, and a new community is developing as more residents move in. T & T Roofing Limited was awarded Langley Contractor of the Month in March 2019, for its extremely high standard of work on the project. NHBC reveals the UK’s best housebuilders as Pride in the Job celebrates its 40th anniversary NHBC, the UK’s leading new home warranty and insurance provider, is delighted to announce this year’s winners of its flagship Pride in the Job Awards which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The competition is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the very highest standards in house building. From a field of more than 11,000, 450 UK site managers have won a Quality Award in the first round of NHBC’s Pride in the Job Awards 2020, representing the top 4% of those who entered. Being selected as one of the UK’s top site managers is a testament to their commitment to delivering quality homes for their customers. Pride in the Job is the most highly regarded competition in the house-building industry. Judging for the Awards is rigorous, the current competition began in July 2019, with each site manager assessed across six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise, and health and safety. Over four decades, Pride in the Job has been at the heart of NHBC’s core purpose to support the delivery of highquality homes. By recognising the very best site managers across the UK, showcasing best practice and rewarding excellence, the competition celebrates the vital role that site managers play in ensuring new homes are delivered

on time, on safe sites and to exacting construction quality standards. Recent NHBC research has revealed a direct link between homeowner satisfaction on Pride in the Job awardwinning sites compared to non award-winning sites. The Home Builders Federation Customer Satisfaction Survey results from 2015 to 2019 show that over 92% of homeowners on winning sites would recommend their builder, compared with 85% on non award-winning sites. This increases to 95% on regional award-winning sites. Subject to our team of judges being able to visit sites over the next two months, the Quality Award winners will now go on to compete for Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards that are planned to be announced at a series of virtual events in the autumn, with the Supreme Award winners unveiled in January 2021. Commenting on the Awards, NHBC Chief Executive Steve Wood said: “Pride in the Job has been pivotal in improving the quality of new homes so it’s fantastic to be able to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Despite the numerous challenges the industry has faced in recent times, the very best site managers of 2020 have kept their focus on delivering high quality new homes for their customers. “At NHBC we are very proud of Pride in the Job, what it stands for and the impact it has had and continues to have across the sector. “As our new research shows, it’s no surprise that Pride in the Job winning sites have higher levels of homeowner satisfaction as these homes are without doubt among the best the country has to offer. “Congratulations to all the 2020 Quality Award winners – be proud of your incredible achievements!” For the full list of winners please visit click here
