04 Industry News A ‘clear shift’ in industry support for collaboration to recover textile flooring waste materials and help develop technology and infrastructure for the circular economy was evident at Carpet Recycling UK’s (CRUK) Annual Conference, Dinner and Awards Event held in June 2022.

Speaking after their first in-person event for three years, Adnan ZebKhan, CRUK Scheme Manager commented: “We received a tremendously positive response from the 90+ delegates who felt motivated to take greater action on sustainability within their organisations and collectively as a sector. We look forward to continuing the conversations and turning ideas into actions.” Sponsored by the Condor Group and IVC Commercial, the comprehensive two-day programme focussed on circularity advancements and market-based solutions, research topics and case studies to demonstrate members’ achievements. Also covered, were policy and legislative changes, and technology advances within the sector in relation to treating the waste more sustainably, design for recycling and waste reduction for textile flooring. The event provided exhibitors with an option to showcase their related services and products. CARPET RECYCLING UK: INDUSTRY SUPPORT FOR CIRCULAR ECONOMY INITIATIVES Through its 119-strong membership and 15 core funders (both record highs), plus extensive UK-wide and international network, the not-forprofit association is assisting the sector in creating new initiatives aimed at pushing a greater proportion of the tonnage of waste arising up the waste hierarchy into reuse. CRUK announced at the conference that the volume of textile flooring waste diverted from landfill has increased again – an increase from 65% in 2019 to 70% in 2020. Due to several market influences and factors, a greater proportion is going to energy from waste outlets and a key focus will be to help to reduce this by potentially creating new markets. CRUK thanks its core funders for their continued support and acting voluntarily ahead of any legislation. They are Balsan, Betap, Brintons Carpets, Condor Group, Cormar Carpets, ege Carpets, Furlong Flooring, Gradus, Headlam Group, IVC Commercial, Milliken, Modulyss, Rawson Carpet Solutions, Shaw and Tarkett. On 29th June, the Carpet Recycling UK annual awards ceremony celebrated members’ p ro a c t i v i ty i n re l a t i o n to environmental sustainability, innovation and success in recovering carpet and textile flooring for new uses. Best Practice Awards in six categories were presented by guest speaker Bob Peoples, Executive Director of Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE).

Members were invited to enter five awards categories, including a new award for 2022: Circular Economy Initiative. Six members - Designer Contracts, MJ’s Event Services Ltd, Spruce Carpets Ltd, Interfloor Ltd, Tarkett Ltd and Bonar Yarns - were recognised with a Special Collaboration Award to reward their efforts to reuse and recycle flooring following last year’s COP26 event in Glasgow. Core funder Tarkett Ltd took the Circular Economy Initiative award for their 100% closed loop DESSO carpet tiles, which are designed and produced using recycled flooring. A founding member of Carpet Recycling UK, Spruce Carpets Ltd won the Reuse Member of the Year award for their reuse of carpet tiles and broadloom carpets since they were established in 2005. The company supplies flooring to low and no-income households in their local community. Andy Murphy of Melrose Interiors Ltd was named Recycling Champion of the Year for his tireless work within product development and innovation in the circular economy turning preconsumer surplus flooring into stylish, hand-f inished rugs and runners. Melrose Interiors Ltd also won Recycler of the Year for their RELAY recycling programme that diverts 0.5million sqm of carpet surplus from landfill per year. They

recover pre-consumer carpet from production over-makes, roll ends and fitters’ off-cuts for repurposing in new products. MJ’s Event Services Ltd clinched the Take Back Partner of the Year award for their coordination and drive to repurpose the COP26 flooring. The company is committed to helping their customers to f ind reuse and recycling outlets for the oftensingle use flooring it places onto the market. Key speakers included Bob Peoples of CARE and Edmund Vankann of European Carpet and Rug Association (ECRA) with US and EU updates on how the sector should approach Extended Producer Responsibility with a key suggestion that a proactive and collaborative approach from the sector is required through CRUK to focus on market-based solutions. CRUK will move forward with this and arrange its next face to face steering meeting for October where core funders will discuss and agree next steps.

Other speakers were Ranae Anderson of Universal Fibers, Andy Murphy of Melrose Interiors, and Luca Bertamini at Aquaf il who said: “I received a clear feeling of urgency regarding the need to raise awareness about the difficulties and the challenges to overcome.” Praising the event and CRUK’s increase in core funders, Andrew Jackson of Shaw said: “CRUK’s activity is so important to our industry if we truly want to become a circular economy. We all have a part to play. The mix of speakers and subject matters were varied and very interesting.” Adnan concluded: “It was recognised and agreed that CRUK is the best organisation to lead the sector forward towards the Circular Economy and to consult with policy makers and legislators. I have now been asked to present at the LARAC (local authority

recycling advisory committee) conference in October to help raise awareness amongst local government and will be sitting on the sustainability committee for The Furniture Makers Company to represent flooring. Liaison with other key related industries is essential in driving forward innovation and developments for the sector.” “Finally, anyone who is not currently a member of CRUK in this sector, be it raw material supplier, manufacturer, wholesaler, contractor, retailer, technology company, recycler etc is encouraged to make contact and join us at this important (perhaps crucial) time, to collaborate in the sector’s next steps on sustainability and legislation, to be a part of CRUK moving forward and to benefit from the successes that membership can bring”.

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd has launched its latest powder coating Collection, ‘Satellite’. The range is made exclusively for Powdertech to the company’s visual and technical requirements and conforms to BS EN 12206-1 standards and Qualicoat specifications. These f inishes have mesmerising metallic and pearlescent effects with a depth of colour unrivalled in a one-coat application. The midsheen finish, with vibrant flashes of light set in a rich colour, is so intense that it looks like a million satellites in the sky, hence the name. Development of the range arose f rom a casual conversation between Powder tech and Amron Architectural, one of the leading players in metal mesh for architecture and interior design. Richard Besant, Director at Powdertech, explains: “Amron mentioned the frustrations of anodic coatings and the difficulty in finding a powder coating that offers a similar depth of colour and layered iridescent effect to anodising. That set us thinking, and the result was the Satellite range, launched this month.” Amron is delighted with the range and used it, pre-launch, on the profiled sheet walls of the company’s stand at the Surface Design Show in February. Using ‘Callisto’ from the Satellite range, the undulating surface of the profiled sheet was wonderfully enhanced as light bounced off the glittering finish. Satellite f inishes are suitable for internal and external applications and can be applied to most metallic substrates. It is a range that stands alongside anodising, bronzes and golds as a high- quality, flexible, unique and economic f inish with excellent durability and colour stability. Samples can be ordered through the website.

BLUESKY’S TREE MAP HELPS GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE PLANNING FOR HOUSING IN SWANSEA Bluesky International’s geospatial data is providing environmental insights and informing future green space plans in a bid to enhance resident well-being, improve air quality, maximise biodiversity and improve surface water management at a large housing estate on the outskirts of Swansea.

The Green Inf rastructure Consultancy, is a UK based company advising private, government, institutional and NGO clients on urban green infrastructure policy, strategy, planning, design, installation and maintenance. It is working with the housing association Pobl on mapping green infrastructure and opportunities for improvement around the Penderi housing estate. The consultancy has been tapping into Bluesky’s National Tree Map (NTM) which provides accurate height, location and canopy coverage data for trees 3m and taller. For the Penderi project, The Green Infrastructure Consultancy has interrogated additional datasets that look at existing habitats and species, topography, vegetation cover, flood risk, accessibility to greenspace and ecosystem resilience. Gary Grant of The Green Inf rastructure Consultancy said: “Pobl understands how important high quality and accessible green inf rastructure is for residents health and wellbeing and how green inf rastructure will be at the foref ront of their efforts to mitigate for, and adapt to, climate change. They have a sophisticated approach that requires access to data and good maps.”

“As a business we advise on the various ways to bring green infrastructure to urban areas and in the example of Penderi, we have used Bluesky’s NTM to assess the existing green canopy cover and how this can be expanded on, ensuring the data guides us as to the right locations for new tree plantings.” Ralph Coleman, Sales Director at Bluesky, added: “Planting trees in the right locations can have numerous environmental benef its like ground water absorption to reduce the likelihood of flash flooding, improving air quality and providing cooling for surrounding buildings. The UK has significant tree planting targets to hit over the next 2/3 years. In 2021 the Government committed to increasing tree planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares per year. However, using accurate, up to date data will be key in ensuring time and resource are maximised and trees are planted in areas where they will thrive without damaging other environmental habitats.” The National Tree Map includes data for all trees 3m and taller in Great Britain and Ireland. It is a unique dataset that was created by Bluesky and is updated on a three-year rolling flying programme. TRADITIONAL BATHROOM IDEAS - timeless elegance and classic styling Traditional bathrooms go back to the golden age of interior decor. They have remained at the forefront of luxury bathroom design for decades. It is easy to understand why. A traditional bathroom is more opulent than a contemporary bathroom and features bold and elaborate touches. Graeme Borchard MD of UK Bathrooms, the UK’s leading online retailer of premium brands, explains what a traditional bathroom is: “traditional bathrooms are timeless and elegant, they will not date or go out of fashion. Full of character, a classic, traditional bathroom pays homage to a historical period, such as Edwardian or Victorian. Clean lines, soothing spaces and a welcoming, charming aesthetic typifies a traditional bathroom. A space that you can enjoy for the years to come.” Is a traditional bathroom right for your home? The Edwardians were some of the first to build homes with the invention of a room dedicated to washing and bathing. These period homes are full of character with high ceilings, large windows, alcoves and original fireplaces. While these original features help form the traditional bathroom look, it is possible to create a traditional bathroom in a contemporary new build or apartment. Start by drawing a layout or diagram of your planned new bathroom, include the position of the bathroom door and any windows or fixed features.

developer-update.co.uk

How do you style a period bathroom? When it comes to styling a traditional or period bathroom then allow consideration to the surfaces. Use natural materials such as stone, slate or granite. Choose wall and floor tiling that leans towards a vintage look with subway or hexagonal tiles. Mix and match eras but keep the look clean and simple for a more visual appeal. Use a patterned, statement tile on your floor, such as Origins White Compass Star Pattern Tile to create a unique art deco style. Origins Glazed Long Metro Tiles on your bathroom walls are an iconic yet easy-to-maintain option.

Traditional Furniture When choosing furniture again opt for a more natural material. Wood is typically used for period vanity units and a beautiful high-end painted unit will create an incredible focal point in your room. The iconic Burlington 1340mm Curved 4 Door Vanity Unit will set the scene in your new traditional bathroom. This is a stunning piece of furniture which oozes classical elegance. Choose from Black Granite, Carrara White Marble or White worktop indicative of a bygone era. The vanity unit is available in a choice of four colours with a matt white option that you can customise to co-ordinate your bathroom design.

Bathrooms 13 Traditional basin and washstand A beautiful washstand can be a stunning alternative to a vanity unit or basin with a pedestal. The Vitra Valarte Basin and Washstand is a Victorian beauty. Its design embodies the quintessential traditional washroom. The chic sink sits on top of the elegant polished chrome washstand frame. This has a front towel rail built into the design and a convenient shelf, ideal for storage. Traditional bath If you have space choose a beautiful freestanding bathtub. Nothing says traditional as much as a roll top bath. Victoria and Albert Richmond Freestanding Bath has a timeless artdeco feel. The standard Gloss White finish it is a true statement piece. For an incredible focal point opt for the RAL Colour Service available to choose your own colour. Taps and showers Traditional bathrooms need period styled brassware. Crosswater’ Belgravia Collection is elegant and understated, a perfect pairing to yesteryear and available in a wide range of products. From Bath Pillar Taps to a Cross head Bath Shower Mixer in chrome, nickel or unlacquered brass finish. For an ultracoordinated look match with Crosswater Belgravia Thermostatic Shower Kit. This shower kit features modern day technology and innovation with a classical look. The valve has two controls and is easy to operate for the whole family. Toilets with tradition Capture the spirit of a bygone age with a traditional toilet. With a

plethora of choice available from wall mounted to high level cisterns, the only thing to check is your plumbing requirements. The Burlington Low Level Toilet comes with a choice in position for the pan outlet so check this with your installer first. This period piece also has the option of a ceramic cistern lever or push-button mechanism. Seats are available in rich dark mahogany, warm oak or white. What is the best colour scheme for a traditional bathroom? Adding colour to your traditional bathroom is where you get to use your creative side. Opting for a beautiful botanical wallpaper can make a striking aesthetic to your bathroom. If you have high ceilings and a plethora of natural light choose a bold and bright colour scheme, or opt for a darker colour for a more dramatic impact. Green is a colour renowned for its calming qualities. It exudes a sense of balance and harmony perfect for any bathroom space. Decorate your walls with green-inspired hues such as pale pistachio, mint pastels and soft sage to dark forest tones. Choose panelling to walls, whilst they will need painting, they will look amazing and befitting of your new traditional space. If green isn’t your favourite on the pantone chart, then consider dark blue walls to create an elegant, stylish appeal. An authentic period space with an abundance of original features will allow you to keep your walls and floor neutral and the features to stand out. This will create a charming and welcoming bathroom where you can relax and unwind.

BLACK EDITION RANGE THE NEWICK 1000

With the rising and continuing popularity of Black fixtures within the bathroom we have extended the Black Edition Range to include The Newick 1000, a horizontal rail, popular as a statement within the bathroom but also fits easily below most windows. The Newick measures 600 high by 1000mm wide and retails at £299.80 exclusive of VAT.

W

e have also introduced the prof ile valve in Black to the Black Edition. Designed to complement the black edition rails these valves will not protrude into the room and sit neatly within the rail visually enhancing the product. The valves are brass and powder coated with a good solid weight. We are selling more and more of the black edition towel rails we feel the reason for this is two fold. Firstly that we have the rails in stock whereas there are still widespread shortages of supply generally speaking so those who would normally buy a cheaper mild steel rail are realizing the difference in price is not that great compared to the cost to disrupted contractors. But also the rise in customers who value sustainability and although it may at first seem unnecessary to developer-update.co.uk

manufacture a coloured powder coated rail from stainless steel, the properties that set the noncoated rails apart from their mild steel counterparts still stand. They will not rust or corrode, you are buying into a product that will endure the entire life of the bathroom itself. Stainless steel is manufactured from over 90% recycled material and 100% recyclable in itself. In order to maintain the ethical sustainability of all of our products across the range, we chose to powder coat the stainless steel. Powder coating is highly protective of the environment, it contains no solvents and emits negligible, if any, polluting VOCs into the atmosphere. Powder coating is a clean process, allowing exhaust air from the coating booth to be returned to the plant. Powder

overspray can be retrieved and reused and there is no costly was te disposal equipment as unused powder can be reclaimed and returned to a hopper. There are now thirteen of our most popular selling rails in the black edition as well as the valves and the complementary element cover further enhancing the aesthetics of this range. OFFSITE SOLUTIONS DELIV PODS FOR £3.2M CONTRAC Offsite Solutions, the UK’s leading bathroom pod specialist, has delivered the final pods for a £3.2m contract to manufacture luxury bathrooms for its second Berkeley Homes residential scheme.

D

esigned by Foster and Partners with Broadway Malyan, 250 City Road in London is a landmark development set in 1.9 acres of landscaped green spaces and courtyards. Offsite Solutions has manufactured a total of 221 bath and shower pods in two different bathroom designs for Siena House. The delivery of the pods to site was completed in just seven weeks to meet Berkeley Homes’ scheduling for installation. This involved careful logistical planning with 44 separate batches of pods required on site and up to 10 deliveries in a single week. The projec t was for the third phase of the City Road development, which will provide one, two, and three-bedroom apartments for private sale, and homes for shared ownership managed by Peabody Trust. The interior design for the bathrooms and ensuite shower rooms for the private s ale apartments is opulent and elegant. Fittings are finished in striking brushed gold – wall-mounted taps to the hand basin and bath, heated towel rail, and overhead and handheld showers. This contrasts with

white sanitaryware, a white steel bath, large format grey stone porcelain tiles with colour-matched grout, and a grey stone vanity top. You can view a video of the bathroom pods here. High end bespoke vanity cabinet s with f luted doors in dark blue and contrasting gold trims are designed to match the fitted furniture in the bedrooms. Aurimas Vaitkus, Site Manager at Berkeley Homes, said, “Bathrooms are one of the most challenging elements to build on a major residential scheme with so many different trades an d sub c o ntra c to r s

to procure, co-ordinate, and benchmark which takes a lot of management time. Accurate tolerances and high- qualit y finishes are also vitally important to achieving the required standard – and these are easier to attain in a manufacturing environment.” “ Sp e cif ying b athro om p o ds simplifies the process of internal fitout and reduces the duration of second fix. There is a huge saving in management time by removing the need to co-ordinate different trades on site. Offsite manufacturing is just a more efficient way of working and we estimate it was at least 20 per cent faster on this project than in-situ construction.” “Offsite Solutions has performed well at every stage. Their team was responsive with excellent

VERS FINAL BATHROOM CT FOR BERKELEY HOMES communications and their logistics were outstanding, delivering this project ahead of programme, despite unavoidable changes to the delivery schedule caused by bad weather.” “The quality of their pods is very good – and having worked with Berkeley Homes previously, they understand the high standards we work to. They showed exceptional knowledge of compliance, specifying pipework and fittings which meet both NHBC standards and facilitate connection on site. Having pods manufactured in the UK also makes it easier to visit the factory and resolve any design issues at an early stage.” Jam e s Ste p h e n s , M ana gin g Director of Of fsite Solutions, said, “We are delighted to have delivered our second bathroom pod contract for Berkeley Homes. These are the most luxurious and highest specification pods we have manufactured to date, taking offsite manufacturing to a completely new level.” “ There was ex tensive e arly collaboration on the design of the pods between Berkeley Homes, Broadway Malyan, Offsite Solutions, and the manufacturer of the bespoke cabinetry. This worked exceptionally well from our perspective.” “ O ur p ro du c t i o n p ro c e s s e s were also sufficiently flexible to accommodate the manufacture of a second range of bathroom pods for this mixed tenure project, to meet the requirements of the shared ownership homes which were specified by Peabody Trust. This gave Berkeley Homes all the speed, quality, and procurement benefits of offsite construction from a single manufacturer.” The luxury pods have a frameless glass shower enclosure, floor standing dual flush toilet, threedoor mirrored cabinets, underfloor heating, and integrated LED lighting – creating a luxurious ambience for contemporary living.

A specially designed, 1.2m high niche feature is recessed into the wall in the shower and above the bath. This was fully tiled and fitted with glass shelves. An ef fec tive and innovative underfloor heating solution was used for City Road, with a sub-floor with grooves to hold the pipework and an aluminium diffuser plate for even heat distribution. This was all integral to the pod and fully fitted in the factory. The bathroom pods for the shared ownership homes were fully tiled in limestone-coloured large format tiles to reduce maintenance and the need for repainting. Each bathroom was pre-installed with a bath and overhead shower on a sliding wall-mounted rail, a semi-recessed hand basin, free standing back-to-wall toilet, a tiled vanity top, heated towel rail, and underfloor heating. A large mirror above the hand basin was inset into the tiles for a flush, high quality finish.

The contract at City Road follows O f f site Solutions’ succes s ful delivery of an £8m project for Berkeley Homes for the offsite manufacture of more than 900 high specification bathroom pods for a 68-storey tower at South Quay Plaza in London Docklands. Offsite Solutions offers the UK’s largest range of pods to suit many dif ferent building types and applications. Options include s teel-framed bathroom pods with p orcelain -tile d f inishe s for high-end apartments, PRS, student residences and hotels; robust and low maintenance GRP composite shower pods for s tudent accommo dation, build-to-rent, care homes, social housing, and healthcare; hybrid pods for specialist projects, and award-winning demountable GRP pods for ease of installation in refurbishment schemes. Designed to exude confidence and high character, this deliciously deep purple kitchen truly reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle and love for being creative. Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design says, “We pride ourselves on being original by design and we were instantly inspired by this artistic brief for a hardworking kitchen dining space that has dual access and entry to the garden. In fact, the project in Broadstairs presented us with a unique challenge, as we needed to work within the parameters of the period property that has existing architectural features, an inflexible blueprint and limited natural light.” B ra n d t D e s i g n t h e re fo re chose a parallel layout to allow the kitchen furniture to developer-update.co.uk

Built-in models would evoke a more contemporary look not in keeping with the classic ebb and flow of the kitchen space, and so a 50s retro-style Smeg fridge, Bertazzoni range cooker and AGA cast-iron cooker in stylish British Racing Green are chosen for authenticity.

To accentuate the homeowners love of cooking, bespoke Heritage Furniture by Brandt Design was the natural choice thanks to its in-frame cabinetry, ability to be hand painted and traditional-style toe-kicks that feature a recessed plinth at the base of the cabinets to look like independent pieces of furniture. Saturated in colour, this rich and

The need for ample storage is critical in any kitchen and in this case, Brandt Design ensured precise space planning of the furniture in terms of layout, proportions, and sight lines. Julia adds, “Discovering what our clients love to cook and how regularly they entertain at home is a key part of our design process, as we often take this time to suggest added extras like a dedicated coffee station, walk-in pantry or breakfast cupboard to help streamline daily life. Needing to be sensitive to existing architectural features, we recommended using a portion of redundant space behind the kitchen wall and turn it into a practical l-shaped food store complete with three custom shelves and enough space for a toaster.” The homeowner balances her busy workload and love of cooking with fresh ingredients from this very kitchen, and her fondness for traditional French cuisine is echoed throughout the room thanks to her eclectic mix of colours, country-style décor and choice of antique hardware. Managing Director at Brandt Design, Scott Davis says, “The painted kitchen is a superb vehicle for personal expression, so you need to be sure that you really love the colour and see it how reacts when exposed to natural daylight or under artif icial lighting. Selecting a Shaker-style door is an unbeatable way to unite old and new in an older property, especially when f inished with brass cup handles and cabinet latches on the base units, and brass knobs on the top units. HOWDENS REVEALS THE SPRING/SUMMER KITCHEN TRENDS FOR 2022 Experts at Howdens, the UK’s number one trade kitchen supplier, have published a Spring/Summer edit to their popular online Kitchen Trends 2022 Guide, revealing the latest inspiration for fashion-forward homeowners.

T

he guide features four trends ; ‘C alm Haven’, ‘Sensory D elight ’, ‘Elegance’ and ‘Crafted’— with each trend featuring unique tips and tricks on style, colour and finishing features. Howdens has also identified upcoming emerging trends across colours, style, space, and functional features that will shape kitchens of the future. With the continued reign of homeworking as 2022 progresses, Howdens focuses in on making life more convenient with multi-functional features and space-saving tricks. The four trends encapsulate sustainability, authenticity, style, and comfort. Tori Summers, Director of Design & Innovation at Howdens, guides you through the key elements of each trend:

Calm Haven As the world outside gets busier in the warm spring/summer

months, the ‘Calm Haven’ trend offers an understated sanctuary for homeowners to return to after a busy day.

trend creates a bold and elevated environment for homeowners who want to be inspired by their kitchen.

To achieve a sense of tranquillity, this trend brings together soft tones, natural textures, and muted finishes to create a calm and soothing atmosphere. The ‘Calm Haven’ look draws inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese interiors, so it’s all about marrying subdued colours and minimalism with functionality to create a peaceful space.

Striking colours are a key element of this trend—charcoals, slate grey, and marine blue form this bold look, while garnet red will really lift the dark pallet. Customers

Draw on natural elements with timber and stone-effect counters for added comfort, with chrome or black fittings and handles to help punctuate the pared-back colours.

Sensory Delight Where the ‘Calm Haven’ trend focuses on the tranquil and subdued, ‘Sensory Delight’ is about all things decadent and dramatic. Defined by intense shades and tactile materials, this

Kitchens 13 should choose storage accessories in a complimentary colour for a cohesive look – inside and out.

Elegance The ‘Elegance’ trend is defined by luxury, sophistication, and decadence. Ornate patterns, ref ined colours , and deluxe features define this trend. When accompanied by marble effects and brass elements, it reflects a sense of sumptuous nostalgia while hinting at optimism for a brighter future. Neutral tones including antique rose, dove grey or warm sandstone offer an understated backdrop ready to embellish with luxe details. Iconic marble patterns are the star of this trend and should be the material of choice for counters. Functional features should be discreet, high-tech, and indulgent with no expense spared. Look to tower and drawer storage for a clean, modern look. This will elongate a room for a spacious appearance.

Crafted Bringing the outside indoors with a natural kitchen interior is a great way to create a timeless home environment. The ‘Crafted’ trend focuses on bringing textures, colours , and materials from the natural world to create an authentic and intentional feel. Vibrant tones are key, with inspiration taken from the earth, sea, and sky. Create a nurturing place to nest with blues and

greens and elevate a homely atmosphere with handcrafted elements. Traditional accessories, such as timber storage, help to heighten the rustic feel while making a prominent design statement. Real stone and wood counters, and wood and stone effect floors are a must for this trend to add texture and authenticity. TIPS FOR DECORATING A RETRO KITCHEN

Whether you consider yourself a professional designer (such as one of our expert interior designers/decorators) or your design skills are more “novice,” you have undoubtedly heard of the “retro” style. Anything considered old-fashioned, from yesteryear, or out of date is referred to as retro. However, because history has a habit of repeating itself, some items and styles from 20, or 30 years ago are now considered trendy; thus, anything from your parent’s old sofa to your grandparents’ fridge can be considered retro.

Although the retro style can be applied to any room, the kitchen appears to be the most popular. And, with so many vintage options available nowadays, it only makes sense to have a clearheaded guide offering you some tips and tricks on how to best give your kitchen a retro look. So, if you’ve always wanted a retro kitchen, start by planning the following:

Retro designs Fortunately, you don’t have to cover your entire kitchen in retro patterns. Simply choose one main space for it (such as a focal wall) and slap some geometric patterns on it with wallpaper to make your kitchen look like a stylish throwback.

Cabinet color schemes

Take good care of your windows

Although we have nothing against neutral colors, your retro-style kitchen deserves more distinct tones such as pickle, sage, teal, pastels, and so on. So, consider which colors will work best with your cabinet design, or leave them colorless if you’d rather spread some color elsewhere (such as your décor, wallpaper, etc.). You could combine the colors with your elements such as a CopperSmith Hoods Keep that in mind.

Replace those modern-looking blinds with curtains that feature a vintage print or pattern. If you can’t find the perfect curtains for your retro kitchen, why not go to a fabric store and make your own?

Experiment with tiling You can’t go wrong with classic black-and-white tiling in a vintage setting. This will look fantastic with any retro-style colors you decide to use in your kitchen. Remember that those white spots are great for attracting and reflecting incoming light, whether natural or artificial. developer-update.co.uk

Don’t overlook retro artwork You don’t have to redo your entire kitchen; simply adding a few vintage-style prints (like those oldschool Coca-Cola advertisements, for example) to the wall can give it a slightly retro vibe.

Choose colorful appliances You can’t play with the retro vibe without incorporating some bright colors. Consider retrostyle appliances such as a mint-green SMEG

Kitchens 27

fridge, a classic toaster in duck-egg blue, a Big Chill retro dishwasher in warm orange, and so on to ensure those colors take up adequate space.

An abundance of light When looking at vintage designer kitchens, you’ll notice that they’re all bathed in light. Consider increasing the light source in your kitchen (via more lighting fixtures, larger windows, or even a skylight) to bring in as much light and air as possible. Why not, if your budget allows for a lot of little extras that can help you save time? What do you think about a filtration faucet that provides cold, filtered drinking water? Or how about a handy pot filler faucet right above your stove? Lotion- or soap dispensers are ideal for regular handwashing (and cleaner countertops).

When shopping for kitchen faucets, take the time to consider all of your options and consult with professionals to ensure that your chosen faucets will not only make your kitchen more functional and enjoyable but also more visually appealing. When discussing modern decor, you cannot overlook the modern minimalist style and the stunning decor that can be created using it. A beautiful decor could be created by keeping the color and style in harmony with the dining table in the kitchen or the open-plan kitchen integrated with the dining room. The decor is held together by everything being black and white. The paintings add a splash of color to the decor, elevating its elegance. It’s ideal!

HARTLEY BOTANIC’S 2022 ‘CALM & WELLBEING’ RHS TATTON PARK FLOWER SHOW TRADESTAND

E

nglish Greenhouse and Glasshouse manufacturer Hartley Botanic will bring its stylish stand, themed around Calm & Wellbeing, to the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show. The tradestand will feature f ive, handmade Har tley Botanic Greenhouses which were also shown at the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival. The structures have been powder coated in complimentary and elegant tones of bronze and grey and are nestled amongst a naturalised planting scheme focusing on form and texture. Landscaping and styling will have a neutral and minimalist look, bringing together a calming feel with a chic, luxury aesthetic. For its Tatton Park stand, Hartley Botanic has used Base Squared for the build, planting, design and styling. The f ive handmade Hartley Botanic structures to be featured on the RHS Tatton Park tradestand include; a Victorian Lodge (with two additional single gable end doors) in manganese, a Victorian Terrace in dark bronze with an additional single gable end door and blinds, a Hartley 8 glass-to-ground in

vista grey with 2 automatic roof vents and an additional single gable end door, a NEW six pane g l a s s - to - g r o u n d Hartley Wisley 8 Grow and Store in a bespoke olive grey with 2 extra panes at the rear, accommodating a useful, hidden storage area and a Patio Glasshouse in white aluminium (housed inside the Victorian Lodge.) Contemporary porcelain flooring will be combined with handmade clay pavers to provide a subtle textural contrast and has been designed to sit harmoniously within the Greenhouses.

Stylish Calm and Wellbeing Hartley Botanic’s ‘Calm and Wellbeing’ tradestand theme has also been shown at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show and this year’s Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. The concept was designed to show how Hartley Botanic’s elegant structures can offer a calming sanctuary for gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Furniture used has been minimal to create a light, airy feel and beautiful dressing elements, such as modern chairs and sculptural pieces have been carefully curated to exude order and tranquility, rather than clutter. The Greenhouses on the Tatton Park tradestand will have a synergistic bronze and grey colour pallete which, combined with the tranquil neutrals of the hard and soft landscaping and dressing, will be calming and provide a stylish, minimalist look. Plantings

on the stand will primarily be in shades of green, a peaceful colour and the only one which our eyes don’t have to adjust to see. Gentle classical music inside the structures will provide a relaxing soundtrack as visitors walk around the stand.

Informal, yet elegant planting The planting on the Hartley Botanic tradestand will be relatively informal and will contribute to the stand’s relaxed, calming atmosphere. There will be no hard lines between the stand’s paving and planting and, overall, the planting will have a lose and natural style. The transition from paving to planting will be softened by the integration of gravel, with low growing plants such as Soleirolia soleirolii (‘Mind your own business’). This has been chosen for its ability to form a carpet of green which merges seamlessly with the mixed paving - all adding to the soft calming tones of the stand. Despite its relaxed ambience, the stand’s planting will still be unequivocally elegant, through its limited colour palette, with rich texture and architectural form providing interest.

Garden Design 33

As well as a strong textural focus, the stand will also include scented plants, released as visitors brush past them and a selection of exotic plants – reminding visitors of the breadth of species that can be grown in a Greenhouse. The stand will focus on subtle sensory detail, rather than big, overpowering statements. Tom Barry, CEO of Hartley Botanic said; “Our ‘Calm & Wellbeing’ theme taps into what our customers are looking for f rom their gardens following the pandemic. The mood now is very much to create gardens which are sanctuaries, places to go to in order to feel revived and refreshed. As such, it felt appropriate to remain consistent to our theme for 2022, for our presence at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival, and now for RHS Tatton Park. Our Hampton Court and Tatton Park tradestands featured slighly different structures to those shown at Chelsea, focusing on designs f rom our popular Victorian and Heritage ranges which both deliver structural excellence and a classic Greenhouse aesthetic.” Hartley Botanic was founded in 1938 by brothers Vincent (RHS fellow) and Norman Hartley following their ground-breaking aluminium Greenhouse design, the first time (to our knowledge) aluminium had been used in Greenhouse construction and marking a huge improvement on its wood and wrought iron Victorian forerunners. The English manufacturer is an authority on Greenhouse design and use over the decades, having been making its beautiful and elegant handmade, made-toorder horticultural buildings for over 84 years f rom its original factory at the base of the dramatic Pennines’ Chew Valley in Greenf ield, Lancashire. It has become synonymous for
