06 Bathrooms & Washrooms

TRADITIONAL BATHROOM IDEAS – TIMELESS ELEGANCE AND CLASSIC STYLING Traditional bathrooms go back to the golden age of interior decor. They have remained at the forefront of luxury bathroom design for decades. It is easy to understand why. A traditional bathroom is more opulent than a contemporary bathroom and features bold and elaborate touches. Graeme Borchard MD of UK Bathrooms, the UK’s leading online retailer of premium brands, explains what a traditional bathroom is: “traditional bathrooms are timeless and elegant, they will not date or go out of fashion. Full of character, a classic, traditional bathroom pays homage to a historical period, such as Edwardian or Victorian. Clean lines, soothing spaces and a welcoming, charming aesthetic typifies a traditional bathroom. A space that you can enjoy for the years to come.” Is a traditional bathroom right for your home? The Edwardians were some of the first to build homes with the invention of a room dedicated to washing and bathing. These period homes are full of character with high ceilings, large windows, alcoves and original fireplaces. While these original features help form the traditional bathroom look, it is possible to create a traditional bathroom in a contemporary new build or apartment. Start by drawing a layout or diagram of your planned new bathroom, include the position of the bathroom door and any windows or fixed features. developer-update.co.uk

How do you style a period bathroom? When it comes to styling a traditional or period bathroom then allow consideration to the surfaces. Use natural materials such as stone, slate or granite. Choose wall and floor tiling that leans towards a vintage look with subway or hexagonal tiles. Mix and match eras but keep the look clean and simple for a more visual appeal. Use a patterned, statement tile on your floor, such as Origins White Compass Star Pattern Tile to create a unique art deco style. Origins Glazed Long Metro Tiles on your bathroom walls are an iconic yet easy-to-maintain option. Traditional Furniture When choosing furniture again opt for a more natural material. Wood is typically used for period vanity units and a beautiful high-end painted unit will create

an incredible focal point in your room. The iconic Burlington 1340mm Curved 4 Door Vanity Unit will set the scene in your new traditional bathroom. This is a stunning piece of furniture which oozes classical elegance. Choose from Black Granite, Carrara White Marble or White worktop indicative of a bygone era. The vanity unit is available in a choice of four colours with a matt white option that you can customise to co-ordinate your bathroom design. Traditional basin and washstand A beautiful washstand can be a stunning alternative to a vanity unit or basin with a pedestal. The Vitra Valarte Basin and Washstand is a Victorian beauty. Its design embodies the quintessential traditional washroom. The chic sink sits on top of the elegant polished chrome washstand frame.

Bathrooms & Washrooms 07 This has a front towel rail built into the design and a convenient shelf, ideal for storage. Traditional bath If you have space choose a beautiful freestanding bathtub. Nothing says traditional as much as a roll top bath. Victoria and Albert Richmond Freestanding Bath has a timeless art-deco feel. The standard Gloss White finish it is a true statement piece. For an incredible focal point opt for the RAL Colour Service available to choose your own colour. Taps and showers Traditional bathrooms need period styled brassware. Crosswater’ Belgravia Collection is elegant and understated, a perfect pairing to yesteryear and available in a wide range of products. From Bath Pillar Taps to a Cross head Bath Shower Mixer in chrome, nickel or unlacquered brass finish. For an ultra-coordinated look match with Crosswater Belgravia Thermostatic Shower Kit. This shower kit features modern day technology and innovation with a classical look. The valve has two controls and is easy to operate for the whole family. Toilets with tradition Capture the spirit of a bygone age with a traditional toilet. With a plethora of choice available from wall mounted to high level cisterns, the only thing to check is your plumbing requirements. The Burlington Low Level Toilet comes with a choice in position for the pan outlet so check this with your installer first. This period piece also has the option of a ceramic cistern lever or push-button mechanism. Seats are available in rich dark mahogany, warm oak or white. What is the best colour scheme for a traditional bathroom? Adding colour to your traditional bathroom is where you get to use your creative side. Opting for a beautiful botanical wallpaper can make a striking aesthetic to your bathroom. If you have high ceilings and a plethora of natural light choose a bold and bright colour scheme, or opt for a darker colour for a more dramatic impact. Green is a colour renowned for its calming qualities. It exudes a sense of balance and harmony perfect for any bathroom space. Decorate your walls with greeninspired hues such as pale pistachio, mint pastels and soft sage to dark forest tones. Choose panelling to walls, whilst they will need painting, they will look amazing and befitting of your new traditional space. If green isn’t your favourite on the pantone chart, then consider dark blue walls to create an elegant, stylish appeal. An authentic period space with an abundance of original features will allow you to keep your walls and floor neutral and the features to stand out. This will create a charming and welcoming bathroom where you can relax and unwind. developer-update.co.uk

HARLEQUIN FLOORS LAUNCHES HARLEQUIN LIBERTY SWITCH™ A professional multi-use floor system which transforms from a rigid theatrical floor to a sprung performance floor Harlequin Floors, the global leader in advanced technology flooring for dance and the performing arts has launched a pioneering new floor system. Harlequin Liberty Switch is a professional multi-use floor that can be switched f rom a rigid theatrical floor to a sprung dance floor at the touch of a button. This innovative and versatile floor has been designed for venues who regularly put on both dance and theatrical performances and so require both a sprung and a rigid floor in the same performance or rehearsal space. Harlequin Liberty Switch™ is a modular multi-use floor system comprised of a base unit with the drive and control mechanism topped with a Harlequin Liberty sprung floor. The base units house a series of moving carriages connected by rods running on high-strength carrier rails powered by electric actuators located at the ends of each row. Each actuator and associated controller are linked to a master control unit located off-stage. The upper surfaces of the base units are fitted with wooden battens which align with the sprung elastomer pads of the Harlequin Liberty panel above. The upper panels are standard Harlequin Liberty with the addition of UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) low-friction blocks on the underside.

This new approach has many benef its over the old approach of swapping floors between shows. It transforms between a sprung floor to a rigid floor in minutes, is more cost effective than an equivalent ballet wagon, there are no labour costs in laying and removing a temporary floor and no storage costs. Harlequin Liberty Switch™ is a modular system that can be modified to meet any structural design requirements and can be custom designed to incorporate features such as traps, lifts and revolves as required. Areas of the floor can be quickly isolated to create rigid zones for the placement of pianos, scenery or retractable seating while the rest of the floor is used as a sprung dance floor. Operation of the Harlequin Liberty Switch floor system is via a hardwired master control unit. This can be integrated with most existing stage control or building management systems. A wireless control system with remote monitoring can be specified if required. To see Harlequin Liberty Switch in motion, watch our product video by visiting the Harlequin website.

ustard Wharf, in the hear t of Leeds, is a Build to Rent development comprising of 247 boutique apartments and ground floor retail units across three buildings, situated close to the River Aire. Architectural interior design company, Lister & Lister, worked closely with Amron Architectural to design inspiring amenity spaces across the development. A central clubhouse was designed, providing residents with a variety of shared spaces connected by a dramatic steel plate staircase.

AMRON AND POWDERTECH SHOWCASE THE BEAUTY OF METAL Expanded metal meshes in Zircon 45 and Zircon 60 were designed by Amron, for the stair soff its, and for balustrades within the Atrium space. In order to retain the appeal of a metallic appearance, a shade was chosen f rom Powdertech’s Anomatch™ range which resembles the sheen provided by anodising.

One of the advantages that Anomatch powder coating has over anodising is that it provides an homogenous f inish across different metal batches and joined sections. Sections can be drilled or cut without f racturing the coating and material can be welded without affecting the subsequent finish. The client chose ‘Regency Gold’ from the Anomatch Collection making the staircase soffits and the balustrades a stunning feature within this residential development. Powdertech is about to launch a new Collection of metallic finishes – look out for ‘Satellite’. www.powdertechcorby.co.uk

20 Heating & Ventilation

Mitsubishi Electric has launched Ecodan Hydrodan - a new, highly efficient, waterto-water heat pump for the multi-residential market. The packaged ‘plug & play’ solution is specif ically design ed to provide heating and hot water in residential apartments, and to capitalise on the signif icant sustainable energy eff iciency that the next generation of heat networks offer. It also operates with a low quantity of low-GWP R32 refrigerant, to help keep environmental impact to a minimum. “ There are already renewable heating solutions for single homes, but this is one of the first truly lowcarbon options available for multi-residential apartments”, said Alex Bagnell, Product Manager for Hydronics at Mitsubishi Electric. “The next decade will see us continue to decarbonise home heating, in order to reach the net-zero target and low-carbon technology will play a pivotal role here. Ecodan Hydrodan, and particularly the use of water-to-water heating, is well placed to support this”. The built environment contributes 30% of all carbon emitted in the UK with heating residential homes accounting for 17% alone. Ecodan Hydrodan units can be installed in individual apar tments to deliver domestic hot water using an integrated storage tank, and low temperature hot developer-update.co.uk

water for heating. The units connect to a 5th generation ambient temperature heat network deployed throughout the building, to deliver renewable heating and hot water. 5th generation networks utilise ultra-low temperature, typically between 10-30°C, the use of such a low temperature means that multiple water source heat pumps can be used on the network. The heat pumps can use the network as a heat source or heat sink depending on the demand for heating or cooling. This means that the network can be used as an energy store to share rejected energy f rom cooling plant with the heat injection needs of heating plant. Ecodan Hydrodan upgrades heat energy f rom the water loop for use in each apartment. Each packaged unit offers a capacity range of between 1.1kW and 7.5kW with flow temperatures of up to 60°C. The 170-litre integrated tank includes variable PIC (Pressure Independent Control) Valve loop control, which allows the flow into the unit to change independently of the pressure in the system. All connections for the heat network, mains cold water, DHW and LTHW circuit are fitted at the top of the unit for simple installation. Ecodan Hydrodan is also compatible with UFH,

radiators, fan coils and fan assisted radiators, and offers both single and twin zone control. The unit incorporates an easily removed heat pump module containing the compressor, ref rigerant to water heat exchanger, loop to refrigerant plate heat exchanger and water circulating pump. The heat pump module makes maintenance and even repair simple, and operates at ultra-low noise output, meaning there is no disturbance for occupants in apartment buildings. Its highly eff icient heating and hot water production and advanced, internet-based controls can help keep running costs down for owners. “The move to low temperature heat networks using the water-to-water model helps to significantly improve the current heat network technologies, by reducing the distribution losses and contribution to apartment overheating,” added Bagnall. “Ecodan Hydrodan technology also leads the way towards larger community and network heating schemes, where energy can be sourced and shared from other HVAC technologies”. To find out more about Ecodan Hydrodan, please visit https://les.mitsubishielectric. co.uk/products/heating/commercial/ ecodan-hydrodan

Nuaire have been great at providing design advice to support us in overcoming this challenge whilst meeting changing energy regulations, as well as the architectural and conservation expectations. Azu Hatch, Project Engineer at Mott MacDonald.

OVERVIEW // St Albans Cathedral - Nuaire’s XBC supports ambitious conservation of Britain’s oldest shrine.

NUAIRE CASE STUDY ST. ALBANS CATHEDRAL

// THE PROJECT Over 900 years old, St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain, with most of its architecture dating back to Norman times. October 2017 saw the start of building work to create a new Welcome Centre, as well as renovation of the existing Chapter House, which provides specially adapted spaces designed for children and adult learning, and hosts the site’s library. Commissioned in 2014, the design team were set a challenging yet exciting brief – to design a new visitor Welcome Centre, sympathetically connecting the main Cathedral building to its 1980’s Chapter House, and providing muchneeded accommodation and modern facilities to support the varying needs of the Cathedral congregation, visitors and staff. The technical team comprised of Simpson and Brown Architects, Mott MacDonald for mechanical and electrical services engineering design, and Momentum Structural Engineers. The Main Contractor was Thomas Sinden Construction, with ventilation installation work awarded to Constant Air Systems Ltd.

// CONSERVATION CHALLENGES Prior to the refurbishment works, much of the Crypt and first floor Education spaces were naturally ventilated. However, the introduction of a new lift in the Chapter House has meant that the original 1980’s Crypt ventilation plant was left without means to deliver heat and ventilation to the largely windowless basement space, used for community groups. Azu Hatch, project engineer at Mott MacDonald, explained: “The first floor Education Space will be used for community events, in line with the Cathedral’s new community and business plans. It was agreed that ducted ventilation and a comfort cooling system would be provided to meet standards for a modern space, with a bestfit sustainable solution.”

Being a listed and historical building meant the project presented various challenges for the design team to overcome, such as meeting regulations whilst ensuring the building remained relatively unchanged. She went on to comment: “Nuaire have been great at providing design advice to support us in overcoming this challenge whilst meeting changing energy regulations, as well as the architectural and conservation expectations.” One major challenge for the project design team was to design in a heat recovery unit suitable of ventilating a space for 60 visitors, whilst ensuring no structural aspects of the listed building were changed. Nuaire XBC units were specified to meet regulations, whilst providing a solution to the space restrictions. Nuaire Area Sales Engineer, Andrew Bott, worked closely with Mott MacDonald throughout design stages of the project. He commented: “One of the challenges here was to find a heat recovery unit that fitted under the newly constructed elevated floor void as space was a premium here. A major feature of the XBC that enabled this was depth – the XBC range of units is the shallowest on the market relative to air volume.”

The first floor Education Space will be

XBC units are fully accessible from the side and require only 260mm for filter removal – this makes maintenance possible within the confined space. When the final timber floor is installed over the newly raised floor level incorporating the access hatches, the location of the unit means it will be almost invisible within the architecturally-sensitive space.
